Your First Podcast Interview: How to Sound Like an Expert in a Time-Limited Format

As you become more popular as a businessperson, media opportunities sprout up, both online and offline. Mastering these opportunities without looking like an amateur is the key to bringing crowds closer to you, and when there are crowds, there are buyers.

Many people decline interviews and/or podcasts because they feel that it's not worth their time. I've heard this argument used more with podcasts because it can be difficult sometimes to see how many people are listening. I disagree with this argument -- I think that any time someone can drop your name positively, that's a mighty good opportunity in marketingland that you need to take on.

Tip #1: Be Aware of the Limits
Lots of podcasts are in 15-minute rather than 30-minute chunks, so hitting your key points in a short amount of time is essential. Think on your feet and don't be afraid to cut answers short -- your audience probably doesn't need the history, they just want to know the results.

Tip #2: Make Your Story Relevant and Results-Oriented
Professional business speakers often teach the STAR method to corporate training classes, and it does work very well in interviews for one reason: it focuses on the result and it hooks the result on the end (which is usually the most people listen to, not always but most of the time) of what you're saying. For those that aren't familiar with the STAR method, it's Situation - Task - Action - Results. If you tell a story, it should fit within that frame work.

The results part of the story is the most important, because that's what listeners will key into: oh, I had a situation like that, and if they could fix with with Solution X, so can I! *clicks through to take action*. It really is that simple, marketing darlings.

Tip #3: As Cheesy As It Sounds, Be Yourself

When you become a media personality, you have to be yourself -- insincerity shows through like nothing else, and listeners will hear the nervous vibes in your voice, the way poker players give away the status of the cards they've been dealt by very similar nonverbal cues. If you're a "laugher" like I am, don't try to squelch a good chuckle if that's what comes naturally to you. On the flip side, if you're a more reserved person, don't force a laugh just to try to give the impression you're a chuckler.

Take those tips to heart, whether you do a podcast-style interview or a full blown media extravaganza. No matter what you do, remember this: work hard, play hard, and love easily!
